I can't speak to long time Mac developers, but certainly a major contributing factor to the fertile Cocoa development biosphere was the University of Washington. They had enough NeXT machines to have at least one big lab if memory serves, which seems to have insprired a generation of developers. Shipley was at UWash, and WebCrawler (originally an Obj-C application way back in 1994) was written there.

The shear number of developers. . .

Excellent pun! Normally, it would be "sheer," but sheep need to get sheared. Good one.

That IS and impressive list of indy Mac developers and I cannot take on the challenge. I wish Houston could compete, but I don't know of anything other than Alsoft (DiskWarrior).

My theory is that great Mac developers are driven, in part, by a certain antipathy toward Microsoft. Until the crash, Enron was everywhere in Houston. The baseball stadium, sponsorships and the mantle of success was put on Enron, Enron, Enron. I'll bet Seattle-ites(?) are inundated with the same kind of fawning over MicroShaft. My bet is that world capital of Microsoft-hatin' is Seattle and that, in a weird way, gives the Seattle Mac developer the extra mojo to create great software.

[...] Maybe it’s the weather, or the water, or .. hell, I dunno. But I think Chris has it pretty nailed when he called out the huge number of indie and professional mac programmers in the Seattle area in his WWDC decompression post. [...]
